Book Publishing From A Book Publisher's Point Of View

By: Brian Scott

Many writers aspire to write books. Writing a book is a long, involved, difficult process. Book publishing is harder. A writer may submit his book repeatedly only to be turned down. The writer may eventually succeed. Wouldn't it have been easier to get published the first time? Is that possible?
You can improve your chances of a publisher accepting your book manuscript if you understand more about what happens at the publisher's desk. Book publishers are busy people with several projects bombarding their desks every day. They must decide quickly about what will sell. They must also delegate their time efficiently to keep the business running. Only occasionally do publishers actually seek out work. Let's look at a typical work day of a publisher to help you understand book acceptance and book publishing.

PERSIST AND PERSEVERE
Writers must be persistent. Regardless of how many times a publisher rejects your book manuscript and throws your ideas in the trash, you have to keep going back for more discouragement. Eventually you'll make it in the door. If you can get all the way through, you will finally get to a place where publishers accept more of your work. When working with a book publisher, the rule is the same. If you have a book that you know will sell, you must persevere to get the publisher's attention. Most likely, you will be sending excerpts of your book, not the entire book, to a publisher. As you continually send your manuscript or book excerpts to publisher after publisher, you should try to market it in different ways. Publishers seek a particular kind of writing; they will dismiss anything that doesn't meet their criteria and high standards. Variation in your marketing techniques may turn a rejected book into an accepted book.

WHAT DO BOOK PUBLISHERS WANT?
Book publishing is a strange business. People's tastes are somewhat fickle. A book publisher has to keep up with what kinds of books will sell. It seems mysteries will always have a place on the bookshelves. Crichton and Grisham may tie up the book market until they are finished. That is just one example from one genre of books. Publishers have to keep track of what is selling in all areas of literature. The best way for you to get your work noticed is to make it look similar to what is already selling in the marketplace. Be careful not to imitate style or voice of another author. Write with your own unique words while imitating the use of popular public opinion. Another way to improve your chances of getting published is to find out who's publishing what.

ARE YOU MARKETING TO THE RIGHT PUBLISHER?
Some publishers specialize in a certain kind of writing. If you are writing a novel, you'll look stupid (and get rejected) if you send it to publishers who publish technical manuals. How do you find out who is the most likely candidate to publish your work? There are reference manuals, such as Writer's Market, at your library that will tell you who's publishing what and what publishers are seeking. It will contain valuable information leading you to children's book publishers, novel publishers, and textbook publishers. If the handbook at your library is not up to date, your next option is to check out the new releases and best sellers rack at the bookstore. Buy a few books and read them. You'll have a much better feel for the book market as a consumer first, and book writer second.
Book publishing is difficult to break into. It can be helpful to approach the issue from the direction of the publisher. Before you submit your manuscript again, improve your chances of acceptance by following these tips:
1) Change your marketing style so that you grab attention;
2) Make sure you are a book consumer yourself. You'll get a better feel for what's selling and what a publisher will buy. You'll also find out who is publishing which types of books.
3) Finally, by buying the product you are trying to sell, you will improve the book economy all together. Publishers need to see people buying books before they can commit to publishing more.
Many authors begin their careers with the single goal of getting their book published by a reputable publisher. Book publishing is difficult to accomplish. It takes many months of work and extensive preparation. Writing a book involves intricately woven ideas. A book is a project, and it may contain many other projects that involve research, development, and marketing. Most authors are disillusioned about the intensive process of creating a full, coherent book. Writing a book and finding a publisher is like nothing you have ever done before. It will take extensive and intensive work and development. It will also probably include much of everything you know, and more. not yet edited:Pirsomet Ohr Chadash – TranslationCategories 1. There are several arguments for and against self-publishing, but the strongest and most often stated reason against this option is; “all self-publishing is an untalented person’s way of getting their scribblings into print at an extortionate price.”Well, at £1,795.00 for the full publication of a transcript we certainly don’t fall into the ‘extortionist’ category, but what about you? Surely if your work had any merit it would have been snapped up by an eager agent or publisher wouldn’t it? Rather than us answer this all important question, why not read the stories of a couple of successful authors who were in your exact same position a couple of years ago.If you’ve read G.P.Taylors' interview and Billy Hopkins’ story, (if you haven’t we strongly suggest you do now) does any of what they say in their poignant recollections ring a bell with some of your own experiences? Can you imagine if Billy or Graham hadn’t been the persistent people they are, Billy’s humorous and Graham’s scary books would be collecting dust in their attics rather than giving pleasure to hundreds of thousands of people. Not to mention the financial rewards they have both received since the publication of their books. Whilst we are definitely not guaranteeing you sales in the thousands or financial success like Billy Hopkins or Graham Taylor, the fact is you never know what you and your writing can achieve unless you try. With most publishers refusing to even look at unsolicited manuscripts and literary agents either increasingly deciding not to take on any new un-published authors or because of the sheer volume of unsolicited manuscripts they are sent each month (over 1,000 per month in some cases) they are simply overloaded, is it any wonder that the Billy’s and Graham’s of this world slip through the net? An interesting point to note in both Billy’s and Graham’s stories is the way they both managed to get their first work published by a main-stream publisher. It wasn’t until Billy published his work himself that John Sherlock, obviously a man with some influence, read his book and was so impressed with what he’d read that he passed it on with a strong recommendation to a literary agent friend of his (I believe those very same agents rejected his book a year or so earlier) . The agent, after reading Billy’s book and thoroughly enjoying it, then selected a publisher to present it to and that first publisher took the book on. One has to ask, “would that have happened if Billy had believed the remarks from all the agents and publishers he sent his work to previously, and just quietly gone away?”Graham decided to self-publish straight away, by-passing the months of waiting for a possible positive response from a literary agent or publisher. In so doing his book was read by a retired book reviewer from a major Sunday newspaper. The retired gentleman sent Graham’s book to his old employer with a note suggesting they read and review the book. Their subsequent positive review paved the way for a multi million pound publishing deal with Faber and Faber. Again imagine if Graham had followed the conventional route of trying to get his manuscripts read by publishers who are refusing to look at anything that hasn’t come from a literary agent, and literary agents who are swamped with hundreds if not thousands of unsolicited manuscripts each month. He would quite possibly still be waiting to receive a letter of interest or even acceptance!Finally, the only person who can truly decide whether or not your work should be published is you. If like Billy or Graham, some friends and friends of friends have read your manuscript and given you positive feed-back, those comments might well be an indicator that your work is worth pursuing. If on the other hand their responses have been luke-warm at best, maybe your manuscript needs more work done to it, or possibly your talents lie in other areas other than writing. The decision, in the end rests with you, but don’t be put off because you’ve been rebuffed by literary agents and / or publishers, Billy wasn’t and Graham didn’t even give them the chance to reject his work, and an awful lot of people are very pleased by their decisionsMarketing your Book Firstly let’s look at why you should market your book. As you are self-publishing your manuscript you are responsible for the actual marketing of your book, so if you don’t do it no one will! Just look at the examples of Graham Taylor and Wilfred Hopkins (in Why Self-Publish) and read how they got themselves published and read. “But I don’t like selling and I have never sold anything to anyone in my life.” I hear you say.Don’t worry, almost all authors, whether they’re self-published or not, have been and probably will always be, in the same boat as you. You are a writer and not a salesperson. However, the best person to promote your work is you. You obviously believe your book is of some value because you have spent hours upon hours writing, re-writing and editing it to make the story, characters and settings of as much interest to the reader as you can. You have then spent more time and money trying to get literary agents and publishers to read your book in order to have your work published. The reason you want your book published is because you feel that what you have written is worth someone’s time in reading it and you would also like to be paid a reasonable return for the efforts that you have expended in writing and working on your story.If the above is not fundamentally correct, you need to search your heart for your true motivations very carefully before proceeding any further. If however, the above is a fair representation of your reasons for producing your work, then you have all the expertise necessary to be able to promote, sell and market your book.The first fundamental of selling anything is to believe in your product implicitly. The second is to know your product inside out. Who knows your book better than you, and who believes in it more than you do?
